Can anyone recommend a "build your own robot kit" for my hubbies 40th birthday?

I've looked into the VEX robotic designs and the LEGO NXT mindstorms--but don't know which one is better. Any ideas? Am I missing something else?

I'm not familiar with the VEX system, but I bought my 10 year old a LEGO Mindstorms NXT kit this past year and I've enjoyed every minute of it. and... I'm 41. I just looked briefly at the VEX site online and one immediate difference I see is that it has the option to use a radio controller console to manually control the robot's movements--as opposed to relying solely on pre-programmed instructions. This is not something that comes with the NXT system, although it can be programmed to accept input from bluetooth devices.

I loved playing with LEGO's as a kid and that love for LEGO's has never ended. I really enjoy the NXT. If you do go for the next, Amazon has a great price on it. $211, I believe. The link is below.

I want to create things on my computer. Any suggestions for freeware?

I Lego Digital Designer and Google SketchUp, but quickly become old! I want a free program that does not ramp with my team, but always fun. PS> Windows 7

I've heard of programs has been the establishment YouTube a 3-D model, and smoothed so that you can print and put together in real life as a 3-D model. I see people do to make halo armor (helmets / firearms) then covered the hardening of the things that the paints. It seems incredible. sry but I do not remember the name of the program, I think you can find on youtube fast, I can not do now, lol @ found a job! Lego Mindstorms NXT Software Download V1.1-Where can I get if from?

I tried to contact Lego website and said that was not available for download. We can not find the installation CD and that we have a new computer that I want to install the software. Anyone have any ideas?

Sorry say, the only place to get it on CD. Your only options are: 1) Browse this CD. 2) Buy a new game (I know it's expensive, but you get more parties, too!) 3) give up. (I do not recommend this)
